My main area of research is natural language processing, specifically computational models for language understanding in context with applications to social science and education. Research topics of interest include:

  • - argument mining and persuasion
  • - understanding people's sentiments and beliefs when expressed implicitly through the use of irony and sarcasm.
  • - language and vision
  • - grammar induction using rich, but learnable grammar formalisms which combine syntax and semantics;
  • - using NLP to reduce the racial and gender gap in STEM
