From nfm@research.att.com Mon Nov 19 18:29:48 2001 Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 10:57:42 -0500 (EST) From: Nick Maxemchuk To: cng-all@cs.columbia.edu Subject: Just another place to publish networking articles? I hope not. The JACM has asked me to be the area editor for networking. While I intend to follow the JACM tradition of publishing all articles in networking that are of interest to the broad computer science community, I would like to focus the series on the "Fundamentals of Networking." I will welcome articles that: - unify a class of networking techniques, such as flow control mechanisms, routing mechanisms, multicast protocols, ..., - demonstrate how an analytical technique or modeling tool can be applied to a class of networking problems, - expose a common principle that has been used to solve several networking problems, or - propose unifying theories of networking. The articles should meet the standards of the JACM and be written in a way that is understandable by non-specialists, as specified at http://www.acm.org/pubs/jacm. The success of the Internet has focused much of the research in networking on the specific techniques that can be applied to that network. In order to to renew interest in the fundamentals of networking, and to provide potential authors with a forum to develop their ideas, I am arranging a series of one or two day workshops focused on specific networking problems. Suggestions for workshop topics and volunteers who would like to organize a workshop are welcome. The workshops will be sponsored by DIMACS, http://dimacs.rutgers.edu, and CNRC, http://cnrc.columbia.edu, so that workshop organizers can concentrate on technical content, rather than facilities, local arrangements or financials. Abstracts of the papers that are published in this series and workshop announcements will be sent to interested parties who join the mailing list at http://lists.cs.columbia.edu/mailman/listinfo/net-jacm . This mail group is moderated, and will not be used for other information. Those interested in reviewing articles in this series, should send their contact information and their areas of interest to nfm@research.att.com. Potential authors are welcome to submit abstracts or brief outlines of proposed papers to determine if they are appropriate for this series. Nick ____________________________ Nicholas F.
