The Bulgarian-American Society is a non-profit humanitarian organization founded in 1991 to assist the Bulgarian people as they emerged from decades of communist rule.
The Society has no political agenda. We raise money only to support and sustain the humanitarian, educational, and cultural needs of the Bulgarian people.
We work closely with senior government officials in Washington and Sofia to identify the kinds of help that are needed, and with groups and individuals who seek to promote the welfare of the Bulgarian people.
Past activities include organizing a large conference for business and government officials on the economic situation in Bulgaria; helping Bulgarian students who seek scholarships for study in the U.S.; arranging concerts by Bulgarian musicians; locating funding for the restoration of a Thracian tomb; and, in the current crisis, finding sources for pharmaceuticals, and other types of humanitarian assistance.
The Board of Directors consists of individuals with varied backgrounds in law, business, education, and diplomacy. They receive no compensation of any kind. The current co-chairmen are both former ambassadors to Bulgaria, Kenneth Hill and Robert Barry, and two other former U.S. ambassadors to Bulgaria serve on the Board.
The Society has a 501 (c) 3 status, and all contributions are tax deductible.
