My research interests include:
  • Software Engineering

My PhD research focus is Software Testing, a subfield of Software Engineering. To be more specific, I am researching how to test and debug concurrent programs to ensure the software reliability, security and efficiency within the context of parallel programming and multicore hardware. Prof. Gail Kaiser, Prof. Jason Nieh, Prof. Junfeng Yang, and Prof. Alfred Aho have been providing valuable support, guidance and inspiration for me.

  • Smart Grid

Since June 2007, I have been working on the Electric Power Grid Improvement Project, a joint research of the Center for Computational Learning Systems (CCLS) at Columbia University and the Consolidated Edison Company of New York (ConEdison). Dr. David Waltz, director of the CCLS, and Dr. Roger Anderson, Doherty Senior Scholar at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, are leading the smart grid initiative. I am applying software engineering theories, methodologies and best practices onto the projects of developing intelligent systems that apply scientific research findings by the machine learning, statistics, and natural language processing researchers upon the real ConEdison data and produce results that ConEdison can use to optimize the electric grid control, fault-prediction, replacement and upgrade of the electric components.

  • Computational Finance

During my pre-Columbia era, I spent years working in the financial industry. Nowadays, I sometimes work with Dr. Shen Dong, who received his PhD from UIUC and is working for Bloomberg, and Dr. Hailong Li, who received his PhD from Cornell and is working for BNP Paribas, on the research projects related to the finance and economics.
