Introduction to Intonation
Rutgers Center for Cognitive
Science
(One-day lecture
given in undergraduate CogSci 201)
Spring 2001
This lecture introduces
a number of issues that are central to the study of English intonation:
-
accent placement, tune
meaning, and text-to-tune alignment
-
more subtle aligment
of the accent with the syllable
-
intonation phrasing
and disambiguation
The content of the lecture
relies primarily on two main sources:
-
Bolinger, Dwight (1964).
Around the edge of language: Intonation. Harvard Educational Review
34(2): 282-293.
-
Pierrehumbert, Janet
(1980). The Phonology and Phonetics of English Intonation. Unpublished
Ph.D. dissertation, MIT.
