1. Spotting pitch accents.Listen* to the following utterances and decide where the pitch accents are. Just listen a few times and jot down your first impression -- don't obsess (which is easy to do). Mark pitch accent locations with an asterisk (*) near the accented word, and feel free to use the *? label in cases of uncertainty.
<howto> I know we've gotta do it but I don't know how to do it
<anyway> but anyway if you can't see that then I don't know if I can explain it to you

* DO NOT look at the F0 records of these files -- just LISTEN for now.
* Open up the file in waves by typing: "xwaves pathname/filename &"
* Control the volume using "gaintool &"
2. ToBI-transcribing.Use the "exercisesRU" script** to open sound/F0/label files for each of the following utterances. Give a full ToBI (tonal) transcription, including pitch accents (H*, L*, L+H*) and phrase accent/boundary tone combo (L-L%, H-H%). You can mark the pitch accent on the accented syllable, and mark the boundary combo at the phrase edge. Remember, there may be more than one phrase in a single utterance.

** Then open the files by typing: "exercisesRU filename &"
** Label the tones by choosing from the menu while in the tone tier window.
** Your labels will automatically be saved in your working directory when you exit waves.
** Don't worry about labeling the break indices at this point.
** You can print the display using "snapshot" from the desktop menu (in CDE), or just write your transcription on paper. For waves help, see tutorial webpages "controlling volume", "mouse buttons", etc.
