About the homework: you are not required to implement a node that behaves like a full-fledged bridge; that is, you don't have to worry about implementing the MAC address learning algorithm. Also, I don't care about the exact format of the configuration messages; they don't have to conform to the 801.1d standard. Hint: just use IP hosts with multiple interfaces to send configuration messages (e.g., as UDP packets).

The problems with SSFNet have been resolved (I'm not the only one working on Sundays; renesys tech support is also!). They were actually problems with the Makefiles. If your make does not support the $(shell pwd) construct (the BSD Make does not), make sure you replace the definition for SSFNETDIR with the actual directory in which you've installed SSFNet (the directory in which that Makefile lives). Make sure Makefile.common does not exist (run make clean) when you make that change. You will probably also have trouble with the makefile in the OSPF tests (ssfnet/src/SSF/OS/OSPFv2/test/Makefile); just comment out the ifeq/endif block.

I was able to build SSFNet correctly under FreeBSD; I'll try it under Win2K/cygwin later today and let you know if I succeed.

After questions from some of you, I tried bringing up the latest version of Renesys SSFNet and failed. I tried it on both FreeBSD 4.6.2 running JDK 1.3.1_p7 and Win2K running JDK 1.3.1_04, and I got identical problems: complaints that it cannot find some classes. I have questions pending with one of the Renesys tech support guys. I'll let you know what's going on as soon as I can.

If you are having trouble finding the book at the bookstores, try Amazon or B&N. Both also sell used books for about half the price, as does half.com.
